Hurst Green Reserves welcomed Garstang Reserves to The Smithy Row Ground on Saturday.

The match was sure to be provide a very stern test for Stephen Young’s team, but they were certainly up to the task!

The home side began the game with terrific intensity; with Cookson and Steele setting the tempo in central midfield, Holt providing pace and endeavour on the right and the experienced Hayes proving a excellent outlet up front.

The home team took the lead on 10 minutes when Bolton scored from a sweetly stuck inswinging free kick. As the half progressed, Garstang started to get into the game but were unable to penetrate the home team’s defence; in which centre backs Young and Barton were in control. HT 1-0

The second half provided more excellent entertainment and saw Hurst Green increase their lead on 58 minutes. Terrific skill by Foley saw him beat three defenders and finish with a tremendous left foot strike. Throughout the half, Garstang began to press more and had several half chances but were unable to surpass keeper Mahon.

The final goal came on 75 minutes and was finished expertly by Foley following superb move involving Bolton, Mort and Hayes. FT 3-0

Post match, manager Stephen Young commented: “It was without doubt our best performance of the season. Garstang are an excellent team and deserve to be top of the league. So for us to perform like we did today is good news for the club. The players deserve a lot of credit.”
