Longridge Ladies 1st6
LONGRIDGE made the very very long trek to Sunderland to take on Broom hockey club.
Broom took the lead after 15 minutes, and Longridge barely got out of their half in the opening period.
However, the visitors managed to score from their only shot on goal, minutes before the half-time whistle.
An excellent penalty corner strike from Jenny Key was not defended properly by Broom, which set Nicki Wilcox up to slot her first past the keeper.
As the second half got under way, Longridge came out strong and started playing some beautiful hockey, and it was not long before they took the lead, Wilcox sneaking a cheeky reverse stick shot past the Broom keeper after some excellent hockey from Leanne Pye and Key in the middle.
A third soon followed. Some great interchanging play from Becky Wright and Pye found Wilcox in the D, who passed on to Wendy Bower for her to smash the ball home.
By now, Longridge were running riot, and Key produced a contender for goal of the season, as she dribbled past four defenders before blasting the ball home.
Key scored again with a wonderful disguised sweep strike from a penalty corner, before Wilcox completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot after Charlotte McNeela’s strike was stopped by a foot on the line.
In the Longridge goal, Katy Blezard was outstanding, making some unbelievable saves, supported by Harriet McNeela in defence.
Player of the match was shared between Katy Blezard and Jenny Key.
Longridge play Deeside Ramblers at home next week.
