A number of bridges in the Ribble Valley area were closed yesterday due to surface water flooding.

The closures were instigated by Lancashire County Council Highways and include Sawley Bridge, Chatburn Bridge, Ribchester bridge and West Bradford Bridge.

Reports are being received that members of the public are ignoring these closures and the signage and, as a result, their vehicles have stalled in deep surface water flooding beyond the bridges.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “Whilst it is understood the closures may cause lengthy detours and inconvenience to local residents, please be reminded these closures are for public safety and our officers will be in the affected area supporting LCC Highways in enforcing the closures.”
