GOALKEEPING legend Neville Southall paid a surprise visit to some young Longridge footballers at the weekend - and he’s only the first of a host of legends heading for the town in the next few weeks.

The former Everton and Welsh international ‘keeper was on his way back from watching the European Championship qualifier between Wales and England when he called in to help support Longridge Town Juniors.

Southall’s agent is Grimsargh based Les Read, who is putting together a number of special fund raising evenings in Longridge featuring some of the biggest names from football’s recent past.

The first event, at the Indian Lounge on April 21, is billed as ‘The Entertainers’ and will see former West Ham, Celtic and Scotland star Frank McAvennie and former Chelsea, Arsenal and Stoke midfielder Alan Hudson taking to the mic.

McAvennie was heralded as one of the most gifted players of his generation but is almost as well known for his off-field playboy lifestyle as his playing career, while Hudson was the king-pin of Chelsea’s 1970s glory team and was man-of-the-match when they won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971 beating Real Madrid.

Best selling football author Andy Nicolls will act as compere for the evening, which also includes a two course meal and charity auction.

While he was in Longridge at the weekend Neville Southall signed autographs and presented a shirt autographed by stars including himself and Bob Latchford to Longridge Town Juniors’ chairman Val Wallbank and secretary Neil Laurie.
