National and local champions vied for top honours at one of the most popular shows in the area, Chipping Horticultural Society’s annual event.

The ‘Little Harrogate’ as it’s also known, was hailed as spectacular when it opened in the village hall on Sunday with its array of flower and plant exhibits creating a wonderful display of colour.

Exhibitors included local growers, as well as national champions from as far afield as Barrow-in-Furness, Stockport and Northumberland, plus new exhibitors showing their produce for the first time with some first timers among the prize winners.

A spokesman for the committee said: “The exceptional quality of the produce made each class a closely run contest and the expert panel of judges did a fine job using their top quality knowledge and skills to award points and special prizes.

“Particularly impressive this year were the gladioli which provided a spectacular display, the winning spike was described by judges as being worthy of a national championship.”

Guests of honour Martin and Barbara Butters commented on the beautiful fragrance from the fine display in the hall and had to think hard on their choice of ‘Best in Show’ award which eventually was presented to Ian Sutherland for his championship dahlias.

The spokesman added: “Thanks go once again to the Chipping WI for providing refreshments, including a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and sandwiches.

“We are also very grateful to volunteers who gave up their Sunday afternoon to sell raffle tickets and for the wonderful selection of prizes which had been kindly donated.”

A special thanks was given to sponsors for providing funds, trophies and special awards.
