A tireless charity fund-raiser has set himself a huge target for his next challenge.

Clitheroe estate agent Bill Honeywell wants to raise £25,000 for Cancer Research UK – by climbing all 542 of the Lake District’s hills and mountains before the year is out.

I’m asking for supporters to put aside 10p for every summit I reach so that over the course of the year – if I make it – they’ll have raised more than £50 without having to find more than £1 a day or £4 in any one week

Having climbed all 214 of the Lake District “Wainwrights” in 55 days, visiting 42 Scottish islands in under a month and cycling 4,500 miles around the coast of Britain in one go, Bill’s latest challenge is preparing to go one step further.

The amazing grandfather, who was awarded a BEM in the 2014 New Year’s Honours List, plans to climb the hills and mountains described in Birkett’s “Complete Lakeland Fells” – a feat which will involve walking around 1,000 miles and climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest several times.

Bill, who has survived cancer twice and also supports the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, said: “I’m asking for supporters to put aside 10p for every summit I reach so that over the course of the year – if I make it – they’ll have raised more than £50 without having to find more than £1 a day or £4 in any one week.

“If 500 people sign up, the total will be more than £25,000, and I’m hoping we can raise much more. Within two days of announcing the challenge I had pledges totalling more than £4,000 and people are signing up all the time.”

Through his involvement as one of the organisers of the Ribble Valley Ride cycle sportive, Bill raised more than £10,000 last year.

Cancer survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years and millions of lives have been saved by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat thanks partly to Cancer Research UK.

Every day in the UK there are more than 400 people diagnosed with cancer who will survive the disease for more than 10 years thanks to research.
