There’s no stopping a former teacher turned artist who has not only provided the material for a church’s tercentenary calendar, but he is also hoping to set up a leisure art group in his village - the initial meeting for which takes place on Wednesday, December 2.
Even Kevan Thompson’s wife Penny says he never stops still, always scribbling away, even if he is talking to her in the kitchen!
The Grimsargh St Michael’s Church Calendar, which will help launch the church’s 300th celebrations, will be officially on sale this Saturday at the parish fair to be held in St Michael’s Primary School at 11am and the art group takes place in Grimsargh Village Hall at 7pm tonight.
Kevan says the idea of the art group is for fellow artists to get together to paint and draw and share their art.
Since retiring as a Wigan based special needs teacher in the summer, Kevan, who lives in Grimsargh and attends St Michael’s Church, has taken on a small studio in Longridge where he can draw and paint to his heart’s content, something he says his mother told him to do 35 years ago! He has also embarked on a two year, part time masters degree course in fine art at UClan.
He said: “I was asked by the PCC of St Michael’s if I would do images for a calendar and spent the back end of the summer wandering around sketching in pencil and then started playing with watercolour images. I did about 14 paintings of the church and eight have been chosen for the calendar, both watercolour and pen and ink.
The calendar can be bought from Kevan on 07979 152495 or Jayne on 01772 704112.
