Charity champion Bill Honeywell’s 542 Challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK has now reached the final stage.
Having set himself the target of climbing all 542 “Birketts” and “Wainwrights’” – basically every significant summit in the Lake District in one year – double cancer survivor and tireless fundraiser Bill (64), of Clitheroe, has reached the top of 499 fells and now has only 43 to go.
So far that’s 690 miles of walking and over 200,000ft of ascent! He’s also close to receiving total pledges, many at 10p per summit, of £30,000 for vital cancer research – exceeding his ambitious target of £25,000, though Bill says there is no limit to how much he raises.
Bill has endured indifferent weather since the start of June, including a monsoon on Scafell Pike, and needed to take two weeks off while a nasty boil right on his waist/rucksack line healed. Some of the ground is now so boggy, he’s taken to walking in wellies, which he declares to be far better than boots in the saturated conditions! He commented: “I am feeling good and glad the weather has been perfect. I am delighted with the donations people have pledged.”
Bill’s website at www.542in2016.org.uk is constantly updated with progress of the walks and some enjoyable photography, and includes links for pledges and donations.
If things go to plan, Bill’s final summit will be Carron Crag from Grizedale Visitor Centre on Saturday, October 29th. Anyone wishing to join him is asked to check his website nearer the time.
