Don’t underestimate Eagley, warns Town boss Ashcroft

Longridge Town will be hoping the weather does not intervene once more this weekend when they host Eagley in the WLL Premier Division.

The last time the two clubs met at the Mike Riding Ground, heavy rain forced the match to be abandoned with Town leading 5-0.

Due to league rules, the match had to be replayed and manager Lee Ashcroft is more than a little frustrated that the game was brought to a premature end with his team in such a commanding position.

“The decision to abandon the game was a joke,” he said.

“Had the game been played for 10 more minutes, we would have got a well-earned three points.”

Since that meeting, the Bolton side, who are managed by former Preston North End winger Simon Whaley, have taken just one point and have lost twice to bottom side
Lostock St Gerards.

Despite the poor run,
Eagley should not be underestimated, warned Ashcroft.

“They have got big results against the big teams – a 3-3 draw last month against Blackpool Wren Rovers and a thumping 6-2 victory at home to Fulwood Amateurs,” he said.

Ashcroft is hoping to have a full-strength squad ahead of the match.

They defeated Coppull United 3-0 last weekend and Ashcroft said: ‘We’re going to rest next week ahead of
Saturday’s match. Sam Nightingale and Ash Ball picked up knocks.

Cory Bent will be available, Jordan Tucker and Jordan
Bowen will be back so hopefully I’ll have a big squad to choose from.’

Ashcroft has been pleased with his side’s performances in recent weeks and is
expecting more of the same on Saturday.

He said: ‘We’ve been playing very well recently, we’re a young team and we’re getting better. As long as they give it their all on the pitch they’ll get no qualms from me.”

Saturday’s fixture will be third of five successive home games. Town have been well supported recently and hoping the support continues on Saturday (ko 3.00pm) to see former Preston North End legends Lee Ashcroft and Simon Whalley go head to head.
