A TEENAGE speedway star from Hambleton is gearing up for promising new season after returning from a life-changing trip to Australia.
Adam Wrathall, 18, was invited to Australia as part of the Darren and Sharon Boocock Scholarship, which provides young riders with the opportunity to travel to other countries to race while also gaining life experience.
Scunthorpe Saints racer Adam was one of just four speedway racers to be offered a place on the trip and given the chance of riding against some of Australia's top racers.
And despite tough conditions Adam said the trip had proven an invaluable experience.
He said: "It was a bit of a shock to find out they wanted me to go out there but I was really pleased to be given the opportunity.
"The change in temperature was difficult at first because I have never before competed in that heat and it took some getting used to."
The group spent six weeks travelling around Townsville, Brisbane and Queensland taking part in meets and competitions.
A highlight for Adam was being able to take part in the Queensland Under 21s Championship and Queensland Titles.
He added: "I competed in five races in the championship and clocked up points but I did better in the titles and got two seconds, which I was happier with.
"The riders out there were a lot more experienced but I can't complain. I love riding against them. The people are so friendly and welcoming and I made a lot of new friends. And I would definitely like to go out again."
It is a remarkable change in fortunes for Adam, who defied the odds to get back in the saddle after a serious crash in 2007 almost ended his fledgling speedway career.
He crashed during a race and was flung 15 feet in the air, suffering a serious head injury and broken bones in his legs and back. Adam spent a month in intensive care after the crash which happened moments into his debut for top national side Oxford Cheetahs.
But just a year after the horror smash, Adam was back on his bike, racing again and signed up with Scunthorpe Saints in the speedway conference.
Before the accident Adam twice won the British Under-15 grass track championship and came third in 2006 in the British Under-15 championships.
The former St Aidan's pupil is currently studying as an apprentice mechanic and said this week that with the 2010 season restarting in March he would now be concentrating on improving his point score and using his recent Australian experience to help him work towards going professional.
"The experience has made me a lot more confident. I got to try out different things in practices and I now know a lot more.
"Hopefully I'll start the season a more experienced member of the team and be able to build up my point score."
