LONGRIDGE world football freestyle champion John Farnworth is helping America's top soccer coaches inspire youngsters after a twoweek tour of the US.
During the trip, John made a series of appearances at the annual convention of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in St Louis, Missouri.
The NSCAA is the largest association of coaches in the world and is heavily involved in the massively-popular college and youth soccer movements in the States.
John's performances were aimed at promoting the use of freestyle to capture youngsters' imagination and show them what can be achieved with a ball if they are prepared to practice.
The 22-year-old also used the trip to tie up a deal to promote
the products of Los Angeles based street soccer clothing firm Calle.
He said: "The invitation to appear at the NSCAA conference was a great opportunity to show coaches in America how freestyle can help youngsters improve their soccer skills and their all-round game.
"It also gave me a chance to promote what I do to a wider audience and I got to perform in some amazing places – including on Brooklyn Bridge and next to the Statue of Liberty.
"We even tried to set up a show at the top of the Empire State Building but they wouldn't let me take my ball up for security reasons!"
Football Freestyle is performing tricks with a football whilst keeping it in the air.
John holds the world record for performing 85 'Around the Worlds' - passing the foot completely around the ball without letting it touch the ground - in one minute.
He travels the world doing shows and promotional work for businesses and encouraging young people to lead healthy, active lives.
He has also worked with Mitre to design a new ball which will help other freestylers emulate his tricks.
John, a former pupil at St Cecilia's High School, showed great promise as a footballer when he was a boy and played for Preston Town and Preston College as well as having trials at Preston North End as a youngster.
But because he was quite small for his age he was often overlooked and made a substitute for the teams, despite coaches recognising that he was the most skillful player.
He was inspired to turn to freestyle after reading a book called "Learn to play the Brazilian Way" by coach Simon Clifford, who had set up a Brazilian style football school in Leeds.
Since then he has performed professionally around the world and, in December 2006, he was crowned the World Freestyle Champion in Amsterdam.
