Longridge 1st 232
Fulwood & Broughton 1st 162-9
ALTHOUGH last week's abandoned fixture at Freckleton put an end to Longridge's faint hopes of a first Palace Shield in five years, there was more than pride to play for in the final game of the season.
A win would secure runners-up spot and, bar a rained off game earlier in the season, a 100% record on home soil.
The visitors were the side Longridge conquered in the Meyler Cup Final and while it was the bowling that flexed its muscle at Eccleston that day it would be batting that put the game out of Fulwood's reach at half time.
Longridge won the toss took the bat and it was unfortunate Neil Holden departed early for no score. Neil can look back on a fine breakthrough season of over 500 league runs and proving to be Longridge's most consistent batsman. Another stand out player has been John Simpson but work commitments have limited his appearances.
He made a fluent 89 and with Danny Wilkinson Jnr repaired the early damage. Danny made 29 and after a brief flurry of wickets Andy Simpson came to the party scoring 39.
Fulwood were shabby in comparison, conceding a massive 52 extras towards a target of 232. A silver lining to their cloud was the bowling of all-rounder Richard Turner, with figures of 6 wickets for 53 runs.
Fulwood's top three bats all reached the 20's before being dismissed, the visitors never really looking like challenging a big total. It was fitting that the best performer on the day was slow bowler Mark Thompson who has been the pick of the Longridge bowling attack this year.
Outperforming more regular and experienced bowlers with guile and control, Tommo hasn't always taken the wickets he deserved, but today he returned figures of 6 for 56. A middle order collapse ensued and despite a late flurry from Richard Turner (25) and Josh Turner (34) the Ridge cantered home by 70 runs.
So the curtain falls on a season that has seen many years of Longridge Cricket Club's junior development bear fruit in the form of two cup wins (1st and 2nd XIs) and runner up spot in the league for the Firsts.
This side will get better. Three young lads achieved their first centuries and young pace bowler Rory McDowell looks the ideal replacement for the increasingly injury prone veteran Jon Roebuck, the only regular genuinely in the twilight of his career.
Cup success for the 2nd XI , who also won nine matches on the spin to finish the season, shows the increasing depth available for skipper Vinny Wilkinson to choose from. The significance of the silver medal position means the only way to better 2009 is bringing home the Palace Shield in 2010.
