It was a day of sport and a day of memories as Garstang and Wyre’s footballing fraternity turned out to honour the memory of two local players and raise a bumper £1,300 for charity.
The Garstang and Wyre Villa “Better Than The World Cup” event at Myerscough College on Saturday was organised in memory of Adam Swanwick and Christopher Curwen and to boost funds for The Adam Appeal and Christie’s hospital.
Some 14 teams took part in the seven-a-side contest with Myerscough allowing its 3G pitches to be used free of charge.
Organiser Ashlei Murphy said: “It went really well. All credit has to go to everyone who came and everyone who played. They were there for Adam and Chris.”
Adam died in 2012 following a cardiac arrest and used to play for Garstang, Christopher died of lymphoma in 2010 and used to play for Wyre. Both players’ mums were on hand to present the winning team – Southward Soldiers, comprising members of the current Garstang FC teams -with their trophy.
