Janet Edmunds, a previous owner of Goosnargh Mill, presented a history of her former home at the recent meeting of Longridge and District Local History Society.
Janet revealed that the earliest reference to the mill was in a legal dispute over a lease between an Alan Catterall and Sir Adam de Hoghton in the 13th century.
The mill passed through various hands, including a Catherine Walmsley, whose aristocratic husband died when she was pregnant.
By 1872, the owners were in debt, and they sold it to schoolteacher Richard Cookson, who at the age of 70 married a widower of 72!
The next meeting of the society is tomorrow, December 12, at Christ Church, Berry Lane at 7.30pm, when Gail Newsham will be speaking about Dick Kerr’s ladies’ football team.
