Weight Watchers members in Longridge “weighed in” with bake sales to support National Diabetes Week, raising nearly £140.
Leader Claire Anderson asked members to bake healthy cakes in each of her four Weight Watchers classes in Longridge for special sales – and they certainly rose to the challenge.
Weight Watchers had chosen to support Diabetes UK as the condition is now the fastest growing health threat in the UK.
Currently at least 3.6 million people in the country are known to suffer from diabetes, but it is estimated that hundreds of thousands more have the condition but not realise it.
The Weight Watchers group in Longridge has many members with type 2 diabetes who have found that following the ProPoints plan has reduced symptoms and fits in perfectly with the healthy eating guidelines recommended by Diabetes UK:
These are ...
• To eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
• To eat whole grain carbohydrates, such as brown rice and brown pasta,
• To eat low fat dairy produce.
• To eat small portions of lean proteins
• To limit the intake of processed foods.
Claire said: “I’m so proud of my members for raising such a great total.
“During the meetings I have highlighted the importance of being aware of diabetes and reducing risk by having a healthy balanced diet and moving more.
“I was delighted to hear from some of our diabetic members that their symptoms have reduced since joining Weight Watchers.
“I would encourage anyone who wants to improve their health and lifestyle to join one of our groups.
“We are a friendly and supportive bunch who love helping others to make positive changes to our lives for good.”
