Happy diners: Pupils enjoying a meal in Stonyhurst Colleges new refectory

The new dining refectory at Stonyhurst College was open for business for the first time on the first day of the new term.

The new dining area can seat 320 people and has state-of-the-art kitchen facilities.

It has been designed by Preston architects Cassidy and Ashton, and English Heritage has described the new building as “quietly modern – standing as an obvious addition to the complex without competing with Stonyhurst’s more historical elements.”

Sandstone harmonises with the buildings around it, while modern zinc and aluminium panels resonate with the slate used elsewhere.

The glass front has opened up beautiful views across the western approach to Stonyhurst and has created a light and spacious dining environment.

Headmaster Andrew Johnson said: “We are absolutely delighted with this beautiful new facility which will enhance the lives of all our pupils. I particularly like the wonderful views across the ponds to the grounds beyond.”

The building has a total floor area of 1,425m2 and includes a new kitchen, changing facilities for staff, toilet accommodation for pupils and a multi-purpose space for teaching, dining, games, teas and other activities.

Catering manager Barbara Church-Taylor said her team felt very privileged to have such a stunning facility, and pupils added they liked the increased space and light, plus the much reduced queues at the serving counter

Stonyhurst’s former dining room was built in 1970 and became too small for the college’s 21st century needs.

Before that, pupils ate in the Top Ref, the original Great Hall of the private house which became the school.
