Congratulations to Ava McGuckian, who is in year 9 at St Cecilia’s RC High School in Longridge.

Ava has recently competed in a pole vaulting competition in Manchester and managed to clear a personal best height of 2.45 metres.

She is hoping to qualify for English Schools next year and is currently ranked number three in the north west for under 15 girls, and number 33 in the UK.

Her ranking will change in January and, given her current form, it can only go up.

“As Ava is only 13 this is a fantastic achievement!” said a school spokesman.

Ava is being coached by the number one male pole vaulter for Holland, Sam Ballak.

He has come over to coach and to compete here in the hope of hitting higher heights.

Ava has been training with him for just four weeks and has already managed to go from 2.02m to 2.45m.

In March 2014, Ava is looking forward to competing for Vault Manchester, where all serious vaulters in the country get together to compete.

She will also have the opportunity then to meet Lancashire’s Holly Bleasdale, Great Britain’s Olympic pole vaulter.

All at St Cecilia’s are very proud of Ava’s achievements so far and will be willing her on in future competitions.

The spokeman added “Maybe one day Ava will be our very own Olympian!”
