Inspectors praise high standards at primary

Outstanding: St Franciss Primary School

Outstanding: St Franciss Primary School

A primary headteacher has spoken of her delight after her school was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in all areas of religious education.

Janet Wilkinson, who is head of St Francis’ RC Primary School at Hill Chapel, Goosnargh, said: “The Catholic ethos of our school is at the heart of everything we do and determines our curriculum, decisions that are made, and behaviour towards each other.

“Our children are very enthusiastic about RE and prayer because the teachers are very creative in the way it is taught. RE is taught outdoors, through drama and the arts.”

Mrs Wilkinson said they were particularly pleased to receive such recognition at this time, as 2013 was the Catholic ‘Year of Faith’.

She added: “We are delighted to receive our outstanding Inspection Report as part of our celebration of the ‘Year of Faith’.

“In the Lancaster diocese we receive a full religious education inspection in the term after our full Ofsted inspection.

“As a faith school, Ofsted do not look at RE at all. The diocese come in to do a complete an inspection, which is equally rigorous, specifically looking at RE.

“The inspector speaks to staff, teachers, pupils and governors as well as myself and the subject leader in school. They observe worship and lessons in RE, scrutinise our plans and developments and look through the pupils’ work.

“They look at the way in which the school links with the parish and global communities.”

Comments in the inspection report include: “The school provides an outstanding Catholic education for pupils... the headteacher and the RE subject leader have a clear vision for RE and for the Catholic life of St Francis’ School... pupils speak with enthusiasm about RE lessons and have positive attitudes towards their learning.”

Further comments on how the school could improve RE included ensuring all pupils knew their targets so they were challenged and more opportunities for them to understand the faith and cultural backgrounds of other communities.
