A LONGRIDGE youngster is celebrat-
ing after signing a scholarships con-
trac with Premier League football
club Bolton Wanderers.
Striker Saul Hamer, of Whittingham Road, used toplay for Longridge
Juniors FC and has been playing with
the under 18s squad in the Tameside
He will start his two-year contract with Wanderers after completing his GCSEs this summer.
The deal with the club has proved a major confidence booster for the 16-year-old St Cecilia’s High School pupil who was “picked up” by Blackburn Rovers while at primary school but released when he was 12.
Saul said: “It was exciting to hear I’d got the scholarship. I’ve loved the set-up and training and I’ve really developed my game.
“I was gutted when I was released (by Rovers) I lost my confidence and didn’t really want to play any more, but I started back in the Sunday league and I just found it fun again.”
Saul started playing with the Bolton Brazilian Soccer School and it was his goals and impressive performances which caught the eye of scouts. Last season he netted 78 goals.
He said: “They have really helped me build up my confidence. I’m a much better team player and I’m working hard at the game to make it as a pro.”
Manchester United fan Saul added “It is difficult, with school. I’m doing my GCSEs and I don’t get to spend a lot of time with friends, but they and my family have been really supportive and they’re all proud of me.”
