There was record turnout for the Blacksticks Blue 10K roadrace this year, held on Sunday, May 8 and congratulations go to the 252 who finished the course on the hottest day of the year so far.

The 10K roadrace is now in its seventh year, organised by Whitechapel Primary School PTFA and becoming a favourite with local running clubs.

The route starts and finishes at Whitechapel Village Hall, taking a picturesque route up to Beacond Fell and back and many residents came out of their homes to cheer the runners on.

In first and second place were the Coar brothers Toby and Daniel, followed by Edan Haine-Simey in third place. The girls quickly followed with first and second place going to sister act Eadie and Holly Beswick, then Lucie Alcock in third.

All children who took part received a medal and a piece of Creamy Lancashire from sponsors Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses.

First across the finish line was Robert Affleck of Preston Harriers with an impressive 35:28 minutes. The Ladies held their own, with Maria Snell from Lancaster and Morecambe AC finishing in 43:33.

“Fantastic efforts by all, in competing in such unexpected heat. Cheese and wine hampers went to the top five men and top five lady runners, with wine to the top runner in each category,” said a spokesperson. “Whitechapel PTFA would like to the all the runners who attended and our sponsors Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, The Runners Centre at Lancaster and Summit Physio. And a massive thank you to all the families who worked so hard organising another successful event.”
