Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has today spoken on the news that net migration to the UK in 2015 was 330,000, the second highest year on record and a rise of 20,000 from 2014.

The Office for National Statistics reported that net migration for EU citizens was 184,000, with

270,000 EU citizens moving to the UK for at least a year.

Speaking from Westminster this morning Mr Evans said: “These figures show one thing above all else. The only way for any UK Government to be able to control immigration is for this country to leave the European Union.

“I agree with the Prime Minister’s stated intention to get annual immigration down to the tens of

thousands, but that target is simply not achievable with the open borders that comes with our EU

membership.

“The increase in immigration last year was 20,000 alone, almost twice the population of Clitheroe, and in the past 12 months the equivalent population of more than four Ribble Valley constituencies has moved to this country. The pressure that this places on our public services, schools, hospitals and housing is untenable.

The United Kingdom needs to be able to put in place an immigration system that works for this

country. We want highly skilled migrants and to be able to attract people for industries that require extra labour. We cannot achieve this, and reduce net migration, by staying in the European Union.”
