Longridge High School has been awarded the Ribble Valley School of the Year sports and community award

ASPIRING young sportsmen and women from Longridge are celebrating after being presented with a prestigious award for their sporting achievements.

Students at Longridge High School collected the Ribble Valley School of the Year prize at the 2012 Sports and Community Awards in recognition of the school’s outstanding sporting opportunities.

They were one of a number of schools in the borough nominated for the awards, organised by Ribble Valley Council, which were held at The Grand Theatre in Clitheroe.

Head of PE at Longridge High School, Kieren Sutcliffe praised the talent of the schools’ sporting heroes and said the award was a fantastic achievement.

He said: “We are delighted with this award. The talented pupils, hardworking staff and supportive parents have all made this possible.

“This is highlighted at our own annual Sports Awards Evenings. This year over 250 young people collected awards which included Lancashire and Preston School successes as well as certificates for representing the school, district and county.”

The school has over 44 sports teams with coaching in a full range of sporting disciplines.

Mr Sutcliffe added the opportunity to work with local sports groups and the opening of the sports hall for community use had also helped develop the school’s sporting profile and inspired more youngsters to practice new hobbies.

The school runs Longridge Sports and Arts Centre every evening and at weekends and during holiday time, seeing up to 1000 people a week use its facilities.

Longridge Netball Club, Longridge Town FC, Longridge Hockey Club and Longridge Cricket Club all have ties with the school.

Mr Sutcliffe said: “The relationship we have with local sporting groups is of paramount importance in terms of developing sporting pathways for our young sportsmen and women of the future.

“Local grass root clubs are at the heart of sport in this country and we work closely with them in providing young people with opportunities to participate in sport.”

The award was presented to the school by Ribble Valley Borough Council’s leisure and sports development manager Colin Winterbottom.
