Mayoral charity gifts total £2,800
Helicopter help: Former mayor Coun Paul Byrne with the NWAA team
Three charities have benefited through the generosity of support for a former Longridge mayor’s charity during his year of office.
Coun Paul Byrne and his wife, Ann, raised almost £3,000 through their fundraising events during their term of office up to May this year.
As a result they have presented cheques to their chosen charities – the North West Air Ambulance, Longridge Army Cadets, the Community First Responders and St Cecilia’s High School in Longridge.
Coun Byrne explained: “We donated cheques for £1,250 to both the Community First Responders and North West Air Ambulance, £200 to the Air Cadets and £100 to St Cecilia’s. We would like to thank everyone who helped Ann and I raise the money during my year as Mayor of Longridge.
“During these hard times it is a credit to the people who put their hands in their pockets for these good causes. Without local support we would not have been able to help these organisations.
“The contribution to North West Air Ambulance was enough to cover, for example... £5.50 funds r both aircraft for one minute, £55.00 for both aircraft for approximately 10 minutes, which is the average time it takes to reach a casualty in the north-west.
“Then £150 funds a paramedic for the day, £750 funds a fully equipped and staffed helicopter for one hour and £2,000 could re-kit a crew member with a new uniform. So you can see how even a small donation can help save lives.”
Coun Byrne added that the Army Cadets were using their donation to put towards a Union Standard, while the donation to St Cecilia’s was for this year’s 50th anniversary celebrations.... “which I am looking forward to as I was one of the first to join the school when it opened!”
