Businesses warned to be wary of rate relief assessment offers

Companies have been out and about in the Ribble Valley area offering a rate relief to businesses for a fee.

But this is something which the borough council can do for free, it has been revealed.

The council is now advising businesses in Longridge and throughout the valley that it will assess whether or not they qualify for small business rates relief - and will do so for nothing.

The relief is worth up to 100 per cent of the rates for businesses with a ratable value below £6,000 and, on a sliding scale from 100 per cent downwards for businesses with a rateable value between £6,000 and £12,000.

However, traders can get their business rates reduced at no cost, if they qualify for small business rates relief, the borough council has pointed out.

The council’s head of revenues and benefits, Mark Edmondson, said: “Applying for small business rates relief might seem like a mammoth task to many small or medium-sized businesses.

“They might therefore be tempted to sign away a portion of any potential savings by getting someone to do it for them.

“However, a simple phone call to the council will enable us to check if the ratepayer is entitled to a reduction, without the need to pay a success fee to a third party.”

Businesses can check their current business rates bill to see if they are already receiving the relief.

They can also contact the council’s business rates team on 01200 414451 for assistance.
