From biscuit barrels and jewellery boxes to a slightly more obscure carved whale’s tooth, celebrity antique expert Eric Knowles had plenty to sink his teeth into on his first visit to Whitechapel.
The favourite from Antiques Roadshow took a trip to the historic village as part of a tour of the north west to entertain villagers for the local WI’s first-ever ‘Antique Antics.’
Around 160 people packed out the Village Hall with their treasures for one-to-one evaluations from the Nelson-born ceramics and china expert.
Whitechapel and Inglewhite WI president Sue McDade was delighted with the evening turnout and described Eric as a ‘top notch’ speaker.
She said: “It was a really, really good night. We couldn’t have asked for a better speaker. It has been a long time in the planning but he had us all in stitches and made everybody so welcome
“He was a pleasure to have and I felt like I’d known him for years.”
Sue was able to present Eric with one of the more unique items – a hand-made Royal Doulton biscuit barrel, with Sgraffito decoration, previously owned by her grandmother.
“I have never used it for biscuits – it’s too good for that!”
The evening was put together as part of the annual fundraiser for the group and included a supper, freshly prepared by members. The event also helped the cash pot for the Village Hall refurbishment project.
