Don’t phone and drive warn police
Motorists who use their mobile phones while driving will be targeted in a new police crackdown throughout the county.
Throughout this month, road policing officers across Lancashire will be carrying out enforcement in a bid to alert motorists to the dangers of chatting or texting while driving.
Officers will also visit colleges and universities to warn young people that they take their lives in their hands when they take their minds off the road.
Road Policing Chief Insp Debbie Howard said: “The consequences of driving while using a mobile phone can be catastrophic.
“Using a mobile phone diverts attention away from the road and because of this increases the chances of the motorist being involved in a road traffic collision.
“We take action against those who use mobile phones while driving throughout the year, but the concentrated activity which will be taking place this month sets out to let motorists know that this behaviour will simply not be tolerated.”
In 2012, 5,052 drivers in Lancashire using a mobile phone while drivng were caught by police.
Motorists who use a mobile phone while driving can receive a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence, or they may be dealt with at court.
The activity comes as part of Operation Pathway, a force-wide campaign which sees high profile action days on the county’s roads aimed at saving lives and protecting people.
