Demand for the Ribble Valley Foodbank has risen by seven per cent in the last year.
More than 1,300 three day emergency food supplies were given out, proving that the work the charity does is much needed as UK wide figures for 2015 to 2016 remain at record levels with one million food parcels given out annually.
Also over the last year people have donated 20 tonnes of food and toiletries to the Ribble Valley Foodbank, which was set up in 2013, and it has received support from schools, businesses and faith groups along with 70 volunteers who have given up their time to help.
Ruth Haldane, who is the Ribble Valley Foodbank manager, said: “It is all too easy when you look at the figures to forget the real people behind the statistics.
“We see clients on a regular basis who are waiting for benefits and have very little or no income in the interim and clients on zero hours contracts who are only paid when work is available.
“That’s why the foodbank is so vital.”
Statistics published by the Trussell Trust foodbank network highlight the fact that UK wide figures for 2015 to 2016 remain at record levels and the national need is still not decreasing.
In the Ribble Valley the top three reasons for foodbank referral were low income, benefits delays and benefits charges.
Along with providing emergency food the Ribble Valley Foodbank hands out essential items such as nappies, washing power and hygiene products to families who are struggling.
It also signposts them to other agencies it works with and also churches in the Ribble Valley which provide a wide range of services including job clubs, cookery classes and debt support which offer people the opportunity to break out of their crisis situations.
