Ribchester endurance runner Dave Moretta not only set a new world record at the weekend, but he broke the previous Guinness best time set for an ultra marathon with a 20lb pack on his back by two hours and 10 minutes.

Former soldier Dave completed “The Canalathon” – a 50km (31.7mile) ultra marathon from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge – in five hours, 50 minutes, beating the previous world record of eight hours for this distance.

“With this amazing feat I am now set to compete at the highest level in some of the hardest endurance events in Britain,” said Dave.

“All this will be experience towards my epic event which starts on August 4 when I will be running solo from Preston to Belgium – 72 miles a day for five days – to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.”

The 27-year-old father of two hit the headlines last year with his epic 18 marathons in 18 days feat, raising more than £6,000 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in memory of the county’s servicemen killed during the Iraq and
Afghan conflicts.
