Hard work and love. Those are the two things that Bert and Olive Holdsworth believe are the keys to a successful marriage. And they should know as they have just celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss.

To mark their Diamond anniversary the couple, who live in Mellor, returned to the venue where they held their wedding reception.

And among the family and friends who joined them for the celebration at Samlesbury Hall were their best man Walt Holdsworth, Bert’s brother, and bridesmaid Sheila Kelsall.

Their family arranged for the anniversary couple to arrive in a chauffeur driven Rolls-Royce Wraith to the party where they were treated to afternoon tea and showered with cards and gifts.

Among the tributes was a card from the Queen and a special message from one of their five grandhildren, Dean, who sent a message from Kenya where he is serving with the army.

Both aged 81 and from farming families, the couple, met at a dance and tied the knot at St Leonard’s Church in Balderstone. They ran their own farm in Darwen before moving back to Balderstone and Bert also worked in a coal pit. Olive also worked in St Mary’s Primary School in Osbaldeston in the kitchens and as caretaker. Well known in farming circles, the couple also enjoyed ballroom dancing and hosted numerous events at Mellor Brook. They can still trip across the dance floor even now as they like to keep fit and active.

They have four children and three great grandchildren who will all join them for a second celebration in July. Daughter-in-law Denise said: “They are a lovely couple who are both young at heart.”
