Would you like to take some gentle exercise, make new friends and take advantage of the fresh air and summer sunshine?
Although the latter is not guaranteed, the former two certainly are, say officials at a village bowling club who are looking to attract new members.
They say all these things can be experienced at Whittingham Bowling Club, set within the grounds of the former Whittimgham Hospital, next door to the Whittingham and Goosnargh Sports and Social Club.
As a bowling club member, access to the bowling green is possible at any time except when there are league matches; there is plenty of free parking and while they say Crown Green Bowling is a gentle activity, point out it can also be fiercely competitive if you want it to be.
On the first Sunday of each month members gather to play a friendly competition amongst themselves and this, they say, is the ideal time to pick up tips and playing hints in an informal atmosphere. Beginners are always welcome to join in, not only with the bowling, but also with the Jacob’s join tea that follows.
You don’t need to be part of a couple either, there are lots of single members, as well as bowlers of all ages. There are members who started in their youth and are now in their 80s.
“The health benefits are undeniable and it’s much more enjoyable than exercising indoors during the spring and summer,” say officials, adding: “Whether you want to join us, or just have a chat about it or a roll on the green, you are more than welcome. The season ends at the end of September so there is still lots of time to discover the benefits of this enjoyable activity.
