A Clitheroe gym is helping inspire people to get up from their couches and become fit enough to run five kilometres in a new initiative to raise funds for Cancer Research.

Carter Leisure, situated on Chatburn Road, is offering a “Couch to 5k” 10-week programme to inspire people to take part in the Race for Life charity run.

The gym’s owner Vicky Carter stages the 5k run/jog around Clitheroe from the gym on an annual basis and this year it will take place on Wednesday June 22nd at 6 pm.

And to encourage both members and non-members to do a bit more jogging than walking this year the gym is starting the special “Couch to 5k” programme this Saturday, April 16th, in the gym at 10-30 am. It will run for the following 10 weekends.

Vicky explained: “We will follow the NHS directive and week by week get a bit fitter and faster.”

The gym’s Race for Life has been organised by Vicky and Zumba teacher Gemma Seed (30) who is described as “inspirational” after undergoing treatment for breast cancer two years ago.

“She is amazingly encouraging and a beacon for us all,” said Vicky.

There are still a few places available for the course and to book on, at the cost of £1 a week, it’s also £5 for the Race for Life entry, call 01200 424475. All proceeds will be donated to the Race for Life charity.
