Fifteen-year-old Alex Brandwood is proving a star pupil in his newly-acquired skill of wake boarding – similar to snowboarding but on water.
Alex, a pupil at Broughton Business and Enterprise College, only took up the fast growing sport a couple of years ago after having a trial while on holiday on Wales – and is already competing alongside professionals.
In only his second season last year won the Junior Open category in the Industry Wake Parks UK Grassroots Tour at venues all over the UK.
This year he will be riding in the Open Mens’ category.
So good is he, that when the Salford Wakepark held their Professional and Amateur Wakebattles in June, he was unexpectedly moved up from the amateur category to the pros and just missed out on a podium place by coming fourth.
At the recent European Rails event at Wakestock in Wales he qualified for the finals and was placed joint ninth in the open age group event.
Dad Dean said: “When we got back it was straight in the car the next day heading to London for the British national Championships.
“After a bad start on Monday and 10 minutes into his riding, he ended up in hospital with concussion.
“Not deterred, he rode the rest of the week, eventually coming seventh in the 15-19 British Championship age group.”
Alex said: ”Wake boarding has been a great sport for me and all the people I have met. including the professional wake boarders. are very friendly and always willing to help out.
“As this is only my third season, I know I have a lot more to learn and the trip to Germany was the best experience ever with lots of new tricks I can work on over the next few months.”
