Sadness at final day of village post office
THERE were tears and sadness on Chipping Post Office's final day of trading, as it finally fell victim to the cuts as part of a network-wide Post Office closure programme.
And sub-postmaster for the past three years, Paul Hunt added: "It seemed to be the feeling of everyone who came in - there was quite a lot of emotion.''
Monday's first day of the replacement outreach service from Longridge Post Office wasn't without its teething problems either.
Postmistress Katie Ellis said: "Unfortunately, the on-line services went off in the first hour which, on our first morning, did not help customers who were already not happy at the closure.
"This will have happened before here, and has done at Longridge and other offices - we were only temporarily offline for about an hour and expect everything to run smoothly tomorrow (Thursday), which is our next outreach from 9am to 1pm."
By Monday this week, Paul Hunt reported much of the old Post Office equipment had been cleared and confirmed that the original business name of Chipping Post Office and Gallery had been changed to Brabin's Shop and Gallery.
He explained: "People are probably aware that John Brabin was a wealthy cloth merchant who built the shop in 1668. When he died he left it to the village and it is still administered by Brabin's Trust today.
"John Brabin's estate also funded the almshouses and the original school. The trust is still going strong and planning to build a number of affordable homes on the old village hall site."
Mr Hunt and his wife, Laura, are themselves planning to continue trading. They will calculate the space both in the shop and outside - where serving teas and coffees could be an option - "and," he adds "we will finish the premises properly and move ahead slowly.
