LONGRIDGE'S new Mayor, Coun Rupert Swarbrick, and mayoress Katherine Swarbrick, traditionally "met the people" at the annual Civic Sunday parade and service at the weekend.
They were joined by civic leaders from the Ribble Valley and Clitheroe, town and borough councillors, local organisations, family members and many friends and colleagues as, led by Longridge Band, they processed around the town to St Paul's Church for the special service.
Coun Swarbrick's 101-year-old grandmother Mrs Margaret Swarbrick stayed for the service which was conducted by vicar the Rev David Anderson.
Father Paul Mitcheson and Father Harry Doyle led the prayers, and in her address, Christchurch minister the Rev Helen Heginbotham stressed the importance that every single member should have in the life of their community and church. Youngsters Thomas Eckton and Sophie Watson, pupils at Barnacre Road Primary School where Coun Swarbrick is a governor, shared one reading, while Brigade members took the second.
During the service the choir sang the anthem The Secret of Christ and Longridge Band played Highland Cathedral. Everyone was then invited to the reception laid on by Bite2Eat at the Civic Hall when deputy mayor Coun Jim Rogerson proposed the loyal toast and wished the mayor a successful year in office.
In turn, Coun Swarbrick gave special thanks to everyone present for their strong support "through what, as you know, has been a pretty precarious time for us," he said.
He revealed that, through his year of office, he would be supporting the Ojs children's charity and the Make a Wish Foundation.
