JOHN Oakes was dreaming of a trip to Wembley when he had a rude awakening – from the police.
The 38-year-old was dragged from his bed in Longridge at 5.20am by police officers hunting for football hooligans after violence at the recent Carling Cup semi-final first leg game between Manchester City and Mancheser United.
But Mr Oakes did not attend the match at Eastlands and so could not have been identified on the CCTV images.
Police admitted they arrested the wrong man.
Manchester United fan Mr Oakes said: "I was woken up by six police officers. They arrested me for violent disorder. One of the pictures released of the people causing trouble was supposed to be me. I wasn't there."
Mr Oakes, from Redwood Drive, was taken to Blackburn police station last Wednesday, spending four hours in the cells.
He was brought home while officers searched for evidence before being taken to a station in Manchester.
Mr Oakes, who lives with his wife Lisa and eight-year-old stepdaughter Emily, added: "The officers who arrested me were nice, but they went about it wrong. They didn't apologise."
A police spokesman said: "Intelligence was given that Mr Oakes was one of the people. The real person handed themself in to police and Mr Oakes released without charge."
