Longridge Skatepark competition to go ahead later this month
LONGRIDGE Skatepark Group's competition is all set to go, weather permitting, on Saturday August 23 and if wet, on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25.
Postponed from both Longridge Field Day and the Goosnargh and Longridge show due to rain, the contest has already attracted lots of interest, with the youngest entrant so far reportedly just three years old!
There will be three categories competing at three different times - 13 and under from 12.30pm, 14 to 17 from 1.45pm and 18-plus from 3pm.
All competitiors are asked to register before their specific contest times, the entry fee is £1 and there will be cash prizes, trophies, skating equipment and 'lots more' for the winners, say organisers.
At the Skatepark Group's recent meeting two volunteers announced they were resigning with one - Andrea Dixon who helped to found the group - stressing that a vision for the future was needed.
Andrea leaves due to work commitments but with a pledge of continued support for the aims of the group. The second volunteer leaving is Judith Dixon, who is to resign at the group's next meeting in September.
Andrea told the committee that, whilst the group had been involved in both the graffiti project and the skatepark competitions, there was a need to provide some kind of vision for the future - of the park and for the individuals who were responsible for looking after it.
It was agreed that coaching needed to be rolled out to skateboard users, and there should be insurance support for voluntary coaches.
Andrea added that, although the skatepark's nomination for a National Arts Award had not gone beyond the regional stages, there was the possibility of reapplying next year - "£10,000 is available over a two year period," she explained. "The skatepark has obtained £8,000 for the graffiti project which potentially leaves another £2,000 to be bid for."
Volunteer Rob Cowell reported that maintenance of the skatepark was totally under control, but one of the rubbish bins had been padlocked to prevent its contents being strewn about.
