A ZEBRA crossing is being called for to ease severe traffic concerns at a local primary school.
Petitions throughout Longridge are being rapidly filled in supporting the bid for the crossing at Barnacre Road Primary School.
And at last week's council meeting, the town mayor Coun Hilda Marle and councillors gave their full backing for the idea.
Plagued by dangerous congestion problems for both school and residents, the situation has led to Barnacre staff forming a School Travel Plan.
The crossing petitions are part of this, and co-ordinators Debra Faraday and Susan Berry say: "Our main aim is to make Barnacre Road a safer place for the whole community."
Both teaching assistants at the school, they are tying in the plan with Barnacre's safety standards as an Eco School within the Lancashire Healthy Schools scheme, co-ordinator for this being teacher Rob Smith.
"As well as staff, pupils and parents facing hazards with such congestion, residents also find difficulties getting out of their drives due to parking, specially before and after school," Debra explained.
"As well as the crossing - which would be at the junction of Inglewhite Road with Barnacre Road - our aims are... to encourage more families to walk to school, to reduce car use and parking on the roadside, and to start a 'park and stride' scheme where parents drop their children off at Somerfield supermarket.
"They would be supervised by school staff and parent/grandparent volunteers and then walked safely to school."
A walking bus scheme, also part of the Travel Plan, would see a walking bus following a set route with children able to join in along the way.
Debra added: "We have written to local residents asking for their views regarding the traffic around school and on a proposed zebra crossing.
"All have pledged their support and signed our petition.
"Many of them are writing directly to Lancashire County Council as well as signing our petition, to show how strongly they feel about the issues."
Supporters can also sign in at local shops - Cafe No 65, Hush, The Sewing Shop, Carefoots Butcher, jm walker and The Bay Tree.
Members of LCC have also been contacted to set up discussions on the zebra crossing, Longridge's PC Paul Worswick has pledged his support, and Barnacre's pupils have taken home a questionnaire on preferences for travelling to and from school.
