The nationwide success of the Calendar Girls story has been mirrored locally by The Whitechapel Players production and sales of their calendars.

At the group’s annual Post Christmas Party this month they were able to present cheques of £2,000 each to two local cancer charities.

Players chairman Julie Cowell said she was proud to present the cheques to Maureen and Dave Cross, representing Cancer Help, and John and Kath Hodgson, of the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Julie said: “The money was raised from the sales of our Calendar Girls calendar, and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us in raising this fantastic amount.”

Meanwhile, the players have been awarded the Best Staging Award for ‘You Only Live Twice’ at the National Operatic and Dramatic Association awards dinner at The De Vere Hotel, Blackpool which they received last Friday.

Their annual party was attended by 50 members and friends. It was organised at Barton Grange Hotel by Laura Rowlandson and for which the grace was written and said by Gordon File. He also paid tribute to members Geoff Hill, John Ainsworth and Tom Kirby, all loyal stalwarts of The Players who sadly passed away during the year.

Entertainment was provided by some of the group with songs, music and monologues, including an hilarious account of how the raffle was organised by Geoff Hill during each play, this time being written and presented by John Tillotson in memory of Geoff. The Players are now rehearsing for their spring production, ‘The Darling Buds of May,’ produced by Jane Hill and to run from Wednesday April 17 to Saturday April 20 at Whitechapel Village Hall.
