DO you harbour a secret ambition? Maybe you fancy trying new challenges or perhaps just have a burning desire to learn something new?
Well, Maureen from Longridge has done just that - and learned to swim for the first time at the age of 73!
Maureen's new found amphibious skill has increased both her confidence and fitness no end. What she didn't expect was that she'd inspire her teachers too!
Longridge based Glover's Swim School explain why they've been motivated to encourage everyone to make a splash - from the smallest babies to adults wanting to take the plunge.
"Our students amaze us on a daily basis,'' comments Diane Glover. "We teach all ages to swim, but we've seen a real increase lately in the number of adult learners - particularly those in their 60s and 70s!''
Maureen is a case in point. Though she's had a hip replacement, Maureen's now able to swim every day, and is enjoying her new sport so much that she's even planning to start aqua-aerobics.
And there's no better time to take the plunge! As many leisure centres are now offering free swimming for the under 16s and over 60s from April under the government's free swimming scheme; the three strong family team are particularly committed to emphasising the importance of water skills.
"Swimming is great fun but it can prove to be a crucial life saving skill too, and promoting water safety is at the heart of our philosophy,'' continues Diane.
"Free swimming is a fantastic initiative, yet it's also important to remember that water confidence comes from having a strong technique and the ability to swim unaided.''
Swimming is an enjoyable way to keep fit and healthy - even if you haven't exercised for a while, explains Diane. "It helps strengthen the heart and lungs while also improving co-ordination and flexibility. It's the ideal choice to get everyone moving!''
Paula Glover continues: "If, like Maureen, you're keen to brush up on your water skills and get stuck in, local swimming schools can advise you on courses to get you started at the pace that's right for you.
"As long as you learn from a qualified and experienced teacher, you'll soon be making waves for all the right reasons.''
