A RECORD crowd, record entries with most sections up on last year, and fantastic weather made the 2009 Chipping Show 'absolutely the best ever.'
A jubilant show team added to that verdict by secretary Stan Bullock as they looked back on a day which had something for everyone.
Show president Richard Seed's hope that there would be many new faces at the 82nd show were realised to the full when he saw the numbers through the gate.
"It was a fantastic crowd who came to enjoy a traditional agricultural show and a real family day out with so much to see and do," he said.
"The excellent quality of entries in all sections showed what this area has to offer, and it was great to see the younger generation coming through in the junior classes. It gives us good hope for the continued success of the show."
Mr Seed first entered calves as a young teenager, since when his duties as a committee member have prevented him from going round the complete show.
This year, however, as president he and wife Ann saw absolutely everything as they were escorted through the show by chairman John Neary.
"It was one of the highlights of the day being shown around. We looked in every tent and section – it was fantastic all round," said Mr Seed.
And, in this final year of his three-year chairmanship, Mr Neary himself was able to say: "It's great to say I have gone out on a high! I could not have asked for anything better in my last year.
"Basically, we had such beautiful weather it made the day for all of us, even though we knew if it did rain, with improvements made on the showfield and the new walkway, we can now cope with any weather. I think the public has appreciated these changes. Mums with prams and those in vehicles for the disabled can get around much more easily."
The committee, with section leaders and stewards, worked extremely hard to put together another successful show, and Mr Neary thanked everyone for their efforts.
The day began with judging the cattle, and entries secretary Margaret Rich reported this section had grown to such an extent that classes had to be split.
"The only class where entries had fallen a bit was the children's, probably because schools were closed, but in all other sections they were up," Mrs Rich said.
"We took the most ever on the gate. The showfield was heaving! Entries in the horse classes were up, with one new class 'best figure of eight in trot' proving very popular.
"Another new class, replacing rare breeds, was for Zwartbles in the sheep section, and there were good numbers in the junior shepherd, young stockperson and tug of war which attracted seven teams."
All other animal and poultry sections had good entries, as did the marquees with handicrafts, cheese – plus demonstrations by Bob Kitching – horticulture, flowers, eggs, cakes, wine and photography. Also popular with visitors were the baby show and the dog show.
Trade stands were well represented, and events in the ring proved popular, a highlight being the new lawn mower race, with several entrants having bought machines on E-bay specially for the event!.
The children showed their sports skills in the ring, the Holcombe Hounds gave a display, there was a parade of vintage tractors and machinery and the afternoon concluded with the popular egg catching competition.
