Past comes to life in Ribchester (PICTURE GALLERY)
THE past came to life in Ribchester as the Roman Museum celebrated its annual Roman Weekend.
The two day Roman bonanza saw members of Legio Secunda Augusta (The Augustan Second Legion) literally pitching camp in the playing field to give visitors a snapshot of army life two millennia ago.
Visitors enjoyed shows of military skill including missiles fired by authentic weaponry, fighting demonstrations, formation displays and even some gladiatorial combat.
As well as the displays of battle techniques, huge siege catapults (firing oranges!) and drill training, this year visitors could also see cavalrymen, a barrack block and the inside of a villa.
The award-winning Legio Secunda Augusta is one of the premiere re-enactment societies in Britain, and Ribchester (or Bremetenacum Veteranorum) is a special place for them.
Gary Marshall of the society explained: "Ribchester has become an annual pilgrimage for members of the Second Augustan Legion.
"The site affords a rare opportunity to march in the very footsteps of the legionaries for which we have such utter fascination.
"Ribchester is one of the few sites where you can see the tools and implements of ancient Rome that grace the museum's fabulous collection come to life just a few feet away in the hands of the many re-enactors - that for us is very special indeed.''
