LONGRIDGE Field Day was a record breaking success and a real day to remember!
"We were delighted with the whole event, the turnout of such brilliantly colourful floats, walking floats and everyone in the procession who had put in so much effort for the day," said Field Day committee president Bill Houghton.
"There were more people involved in the parade than for quite a number of years, and a magnificent turnout also for the vintage car section.
"The number of people watching the parade, and particularly all the events on the field, was a record over previous years and it was really good to see such support.
"We were also very pleased that the street collection alone raised more than £1,200, and thank all who donated. The final total from the day is still to be assessed."
The procession took off from the Civic Hall in brilliant sunshine and was led by Longridge Band.
They also played as Field Day queen Pippa Beardsley, accompanied by her beautifully dressed retinue and other village's visiting queens, went onto the field for the crowning by Pippa's predecessor, Lucy Burn.
It was the first time for a few years that Pippa had not been in the display as a member of the Gym Club. Together with the Janet Sutcliffe School of Dancing, the fancy dress participants, visiting bands and all the floats, club members provided great entertainment in the parade, impressing everyone with their performances.
Also impressed with 'the fantastic day as a whole' were judges the Mayor of Longridge, Coun Rupert Swarbrick and his wife Katherine, Lawrence and Hilary Ingham and Dorothy Williamson and her sister Vera Mills.
"The displays were so good with lots taking part, and everything on the field was absolutely lovely," said Mrs Ingham.
Coun and Mrs Swarbrick gave a special commendation to Mark Davidson of 2 Alexander Road in Longridge for his beautiful garden. The first ever Field Day tug-of-war attracted five team entries with winners being Longridge Farmers' Club, and the results for the football finals will be in next week's News.
* Winners of the raffle prizes were Maureen Holden £100 cash, M Paynter a John Hornby voucher and a phone entry won the Mary Frances voucher. All other prizes have been claimed.
