LONGRIDGE had a 'derby' of its own at the week-end when eight donkeys had their day at the races in Thornley on Sunday.
So too did several hundred 'racegoers' who were supporting the first Donkey Derby the Forshaw family had held as part of an open day at: Little Town Dairy.
Runners and riders were backed to the hilt for the 80-yard sprints held every half hour – and more than £600 was raised for the North West Air Ambulance.
"It was all part of the national Open Farm Sunday event organised by LEAF – Linking Environment and Family – which invites any farm that wants to to take part," explained a family spokesperson. "It was the third time we had done so, but the first for the donkey derby, and the whole day was a great success.
"The donkeys owners oversaw the races, Martin Butler gave very good commentaries on each one and it was really good fun for everyone."
The family opened up the farm for visitors to see the animals in their enclosures and also enjoy ice creams and a barbecue in the summer sunshine.
Sponsors for the day were local businesses The Derby Arms, Ferrari's Country Hotel, Bretherton's Gold Line Tours, County Kids from Garstang, Mark Clegg and Co, Greenfields Cheese and Garstang Dewlay, with Little Town Dairy sponsoring the eighth donkey and race.
The Forshaw family thanked the businesses and the donkey owners for their support, plus all who had attended and helped to make the day such a success.
