ANOTHER brilliant record-breaker saw Longridge's Boxing Day Pram Race hit a new high on Saturday.
An incredible 57 teams totalling more than 320 people took part, making the annual community event the most successful to date.
And even mayor Coun Rupert Swarbrick entered into the zany festivity as Dick Whittington – with his mum Diana as his faithful cat!
Funds raised so far top £3,000, with more yet to come in to equal or overtake last year's total of £3,500.
"What a day!" said Bill Houghton, chairman of organisers the Longridge Field Day committee. "It was the most successful ever of our popular community event.
"The money raised is for our Field Day in June and, of course, for a charity we choose each year, which this time is the Children of Chernobyl.
"It was great to see amongst the many competitors that our town mayor Rupert Swarbrick was taking part as Dick Whittington, ably supported by his brave mother Diana as his cat, whilst his wife Katherine, our lovely lady mayoress, played the Snow Queen."
All the teams were sent off from the Durham Ox on their fundraising 'prampush' around the pubs and streets by deputy mayor, Coun Jim Rogerson and Field Day Queen Pippa Beardsley.
Coun Rogerson also had the difficult task of judging the huge range of fancy dress themes – "all of them deserved to win," he said.
First home were Joe Holden and Michael Crossthwaite as 'Santa's Express Helpers' with the 'Grease' team coming second.
The fancy dress winners were 'The Chicken Run' – Cath Sharples and her team, Kim, Kaley, Ben, Brit and Luke – with second prize going to the 'Jackson Four'.
Chairman Mr Houghton said afterwards: "The committee would like to thank our local police officers for their exceptional help on the day, and thanks also to all the competitors for once again giving us their sterling support.
"To Jim Rogerson and the mayor and mayoress, Rupert and Katherine – well done!
" My own thanks must go to Kevin who volunteered his help with traffic, but most of all to our team of ladies, all of whom work extremely hard in difficult and trying circumstances."
In his comment after the race, mayor Coun Swarbrick said "Having taken part in the Pram Race this year, I am well placed to congratulate everyone who was involved – from the Field Day committee and the pubs and clubs that hosted the event through to the multitude that took part in such a good-natured fundraiser!
"Katherine and I are already thinking about what we can dress up as for next year!"
