Yuk to dog waste say pupils of Goosnargh Oliversons CE Primary School

The potential danger of dog waste was highlighted to primary school pupils at a special “dog poo” conference.

Held at Goosnargh Oliverson’s CE Primary School, the conference was also attended by pupils from Whitechapel and St Francis’ schools and was staged after concerns raised by members of the Goosnargh and Whittingham voluntary litter picking group who trawl the villages each Tuesday morning.

After discovering a huge amount of dog mess in bags littered along the road know as “The Avenue” and a subsequent visit by Preston’s litter education officer Anne Millne-Riley to witness the situation, together with the knowledge so many of the Oliverson’s pupils’ families owned a dog, action was taken.

Notices were erected - although these have since been torn down - and the conference staged with Anne and a Preston dog warden.

Anne said they discussed the issues and dangers of dog fouling to the environment and to health and the children were now designing new posters to try to get dog owners to take responsibility.

She said: “We are so grateful the volunteers and schools are taking the problem so seriously and putting so much effort into keeping their village clean. We can only hope we change attitudes soon and irresponsible dog owners change their inconsiderate behaviour.”

Voluntary litter picker Stephanie Butters said the officers explained in graphic detail the health risk posed by toxacaria canis in dog faeces, gave clear instructions on how to avoid being bitten by stray dogs and advised them not to approach any dog without the owner’s permission. She added: “Sad to say, this week I collected 25 doggy bags on “The Avenue” and four of the five “yuk” signs have disappeared!”
