Pupils’ ray of hope
Let there be light: Catherine Robinson with students
Pupils at Stonyhurst College have raised £3,500 for a children’s charity in Zimbabwe.
The Ray of Light Children’s Centre was founded in Harare to provide food, clothing and education for the city’s poorest children, and supports around 50 youngsters.
Some are AIDS orphans caring for younger siblings, while others cannot go to school because their parents cannot afford the fees.
The Ray of Light premises consist of two rooms in an unfinished house, which has no mains water or electricity. With Stonyhurst’s donation, Ray of Light hopes to buy a plot of land to build better facilities.
The fund-raising was led by the Learning to Care committee of sixth-form students. Catherine Robinson, english teacher at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, visited the centre at Harare a few years ago. She said: “This donation will make a huge difference.”
