Stalwarts still support the market
Market: Fundraising at Longridge Market at the Civic Hall for Longridge Band
The stalwarts who continue to support Longridge’s weekly market at the Civic Hall have set up their stalls every week this year despite the weather.
Organisations and groups who book the coffee and lunch slots for their charities have also continued to help create a welcoming space for shoppers and stallholders alike, both inside and outside the hall.
Funds raised have regularly hit above the £200 mark as people have supported raffles, cake and gift stalls, plus the menus from the kitchen teams, being able to buy produce supplied by regular market traders being an added bonus.
Last Thursday, Longridge Mayor Coun Rose Adamson was thrilled to raise £387 for her charities, Help for Heroes and Macmillan Nurses - “a wonderful amount!” she says. “It was thanks to all the volunteers who baked cakes, donated raffle prizes and worked on the day - they are all truly marvellous!”
Coun Adamson looked back to the first day of the market in the early 1970s, recalling traders wanting a pitch for their stalls queued all the way down Calder Avenue to Berry Lane to get one. She said: “Stalls filled the car park in those days and for many years afterwards - it would be good to get the market back to that status again,”
The previous week, Churches Together in Longridge raised around £250 for their newly-launched ‘Footsteps of Faith’ leaflet. In mid-January Longridge Band’s booking (see photo) with its raffle, meals and stalls made more than £200 and before that Christ Church raised £250 towards church member John Spencer’s sixth visit to help a community in the devastated area of eastern Sierra Leone.
