A parish has said a heartfelt farewell to its vicar of the past seven years with gifts and no small amount of sadness.

And Vicar of St John the Baptist, in Broughton, the Rev Sydney Fox, said he and his wife, Sue, felt “very emotional” at the leaving event held for them in the parish hall.

He said: “Leaving is like grieving in many ways, but this time it’s retirement and is something I’ve not experienced before.”

One of the parish’s churchwardens, Tracey Eves who, together with fellow churchwarden Derek Millbank presented the couple with gifts

She said “We were all very sad to lose them both. Sydney has been a wonderful vicar during his time with us, has seen us through a lot of changes and both he and Sue will be very much missed.”

The parish hall was packed to capacity for an evening of entertainment provided by the young and old of the congregation. Personal recollections of the couple’s stay were given by parishioners

It was on behalf of the congregation that Mrs Eves and Mr Millbank presented the couple with a canvas print of the church, flowers and a cheque while, for the church club, Brian Taylor and John McCook presented them with flowers and a computer.
