Joanne takes on role of H4H official volunteer

Helping Heroes: Joanne Rutherford

Helping Heroes: Joanne Rutherford

A Chipping mum is now an official local volunteer for the charity Help for Heroes (H4H).

In taking on the role, busy married mum-of-one Joanne Rutherford is joining a growing band of H4H volunteers in Lancashire and says she is looking forward to supporting fundraising.

Through a network of newly-created recovery centres, H4H provides direct services which are dramatically improving the long-term care for those who have been wounded, injured or become sick while serving their country.

H4H’s approach is all about providing a launch pad to life through education and employment; getting the wounded back to being fit and healthy through sport and activities and ensuring there is someone to turn to in difficult times or whenever encouragement is needed.

Joanne says: “After doing my first event for H4H last August, it made me realise how much I want to continue supporting this fantastic charity and our amazing guys and girls.

“The first challenge was the Hadrian’s Wall Trek. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but the reason why I was doing it kept me going.

“I chose this charity because my dad and a lot of his friends are former Grenadier Guards and I have grown up with the army all life.

“I can’t imagine what the guys are going through over in Afghan and especially if they come back injured. But if I can help in the smallest way then I know I have helped and done my part.”

H4H relies heavily on co-ordinators such as Joanne, to support the many who are doing their bit for wounded heroes, be it baking cakes, shaving heads, parachuting, walking, hiking, cycling and much more.

H4H’s volunteer co-ordinators can be seen at the finish lines, the cheque presentations and the local talks, giving thanks and spreading the word on the help that is still so vitally needed.

“Volunteering with H4H is a hugely enjoyable and rewarding experience and by ‘doing your bit’ you really can make a difference,” says Joanne, who is already planning to hold a stall at Ribchester’s May Market on May 27 and will be joining in a family fun day in Preston on May 5.
