Is it ‘curtains’ for the Berry Lane toilets?
For the chop? Berry Lane toilets
The public conveniences in Berry Lane now look likely to be demolished.
They have been deemed surplus to requirements and repair would be too costly, councils have decided.
In reports after consultation with Ribble Valley Borough Council, Longridge Town Council states that their condition is poor and significant refurbishment would be required to bring them to a reasonable standard.
The police also have experienced occasions of the toilets, when operational, being a focus for anti-social behaviour, and the borough has found they are the most difficult to manage due to vandalism and mistreatment.
Plus they have no significant sale value, so the outcome could be demolition and eventual landscaping of the site.
At last week’s meeting, Longridge councillors stressed that it was not, and never had been, responsible for the Berry Lane toilets.
It had always been the borough council’s responsibilty and it made the decisions to close, with the town council’s job being to lobby on behalf of the community.
It was agreed that the Community Toilet Scheme, launched almost a year ago, had not been publicised or participants indicated properly in the town. A report from the working party’s review of the facilities concluded that the scheme must be boosted by information cards or leaflets explaining the scheme, with a map and toilet opening times.
These should be made widely available through business premises in the scheme, public buildings and health centres, and throughout the town and neighbouring villages.
High quality signs needed to be erected for visitors to the town, also with maps showing where facilities were, plus bigger signs for larger premises.
